Jamaica Plain, often referred to as simply JP by locals, is a beautiful town of the city of Boston that has a great deal to offer. Many assume that Jamaica Plain is indeed it’s own town, however that is not the case, as it does reap the benefits that come with being part of the city of Boston. This especially is great for those with children, as they fall under the highly respected Boston Public School system.
There is a marvelous sense of diversity in JP, which over time has established its strong character and ideas of having social awareness and community activities. As of the 2010 Census, Jamaica Plain had a population of 37,468 within it’s 4.4 square miles.
The area is full of large mansions and well-kept classic Victorian homes. Many of the older buildings have in fact been updated to be transformed into unique condominium and apartment living spaces. Some of these include the former Eblama Brewery building, the ABC Brewery, the Gormley Funeral Home, the Oliver Ditson Company, Jackson Square, JP Cohousing, 319 Centre Street, Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady in the Way, and 80 Bickford Street.
There is plenty of public transportation options that can take one to the heart of Boston or elsewhere from the Commuter Rail, the Green Line E Train streetcar, and more. There are many hospitals and doctors offices near Jamaica Plain as well. Furthermore, many outdoor activities to partake in within JP as well, including the Franklin Park Zoo, the many walking and bicycle paths, the ability to rent a sailboat on the picturesque Jamaica Pond, or walk through the hundreds of variety of trees in the Arnold Arboretum.
